Applying for a UK Visa as a Filipino: What I Learned and What You Should Know

When I first moved to the UK in 2019, life was so different. I was excited, a bit nervous, but grateful that my company handled everything, from the Skilled Worker visa to even paying for my Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)application later on. My wife followed in 2021, and again, the company covered her visa, until magkaroon kami ng two kids for their dependent visa.

Now, fast forward to 2025, things have changed a lot. The Home Office recently announced new policies that make migrating to the UK tougher, especially for families like us. And honestly, I keep thinking, “Kung ngayon ako nag-apply, would I even qualify?”

That’s why I want to share this guide: a clear, practical, and real-life breakdown of visa options for Filipinos under the new UK rules.

Old Rules vs. New Rules

Back when I applied, the process was simpler. Now, here’s how things look compared to then:

Before (2019–2024):

  • Skilled Worker visa required around £26,200 annual salary.
  • Jobs at RQF Level 3 and above (so many medium-skilled roles qualified).
  • Care workers and senior care workers were eligible.
  • Some companies even covered full costs (like mine did).

Now (July 2025 onwards):

  • Skilled Worker salary threshold raised to £41,700 per year.
  • Jobs must be at RQF Level 6 (equivalent to bachelor’s degree level).
  • Care workers no longer eligible.
  • Transitional protections for those already here until July 2028.

The difference is huge. For many Filipinos, especially care workers, this closes a major pathway.

What Visa Options Are Still Open?

Even with the stricter rules, there are still ways Filipinos can move to the UK:

Skilled Worker Visa

The main route, but harder now. You need:

  • A job offer from a licensed UK sponsor
  • Salary of at least £41,700 (or the “going rate” for your role, whichever is higher)
  • Role at RQF Level 6 (think managers, professionals, degree-level roles)

Health & Care Worker Visa

Still open, but only for nurses, doctors, and allied health professionals. Unfortunately, care workers are no longer eligible under the new rules.

Family/Spouse Visa

If you’re joining a partner in the UK, this is an option. But take note:

  • The sponsoring spouse must earn at least £29,000 per year (this used to be £18,600).
  • You’ll also need proof of relationship, accommodation, and English requirement.

How to Check if You Qualify

Before you spend money applying, always check:

  • Is your employer licensed to sponsor visas? (You can search on gov.uk)
  • Does your salary and role meet the threshold?
  • Is your visa route a pathway to ILR?

Because not all visas lead to settlement. Planning ahead is everything.

DIY vs Solicitor

Here’s where my story comes in. When I applied for my ILR, my company shouldered everything and even hired a solicitor to handle the process. It was smooth, stress-free (still I need to know the process), and yes, expensive (but luckily, not for me 😅).

But for my wife, who becomes eligible in January 2026, we’ve decided to go DIY (hindi na kasi shoulder ni company). We’ll prepare the application ourselves. It’s cheaper, and thanks to resources like gov.uk, forums, and even blogs like this, it’s very doable as long as you’re careful and detail-oriented.

The Path to ILR (Permanent Residency)

Most visas (Skilled Worker, Health & Care, Spouse) are still 5 years routes to ILR. But under the new rules, you need to continuously meet the job and salary requirements.

That means no shortcuts. No switching to easier jobs. No “bahala na si Batman.” If you want to stay long-term, you need to plan your career path early.

Final Thoughts

Migrating to the UK is still possible, but the bar is higher now. Back in 2019, I got in under easier rules, with my company covering everything. Today, the costs are heavier, the qualifications stricter, and the process longer.

But here’s the thing, Filipinos are resourceful. If moving to the UK is your dream, you just need to prepare smarter. Research, plan, and make sure every move counts.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about getting a visa. It’s about building a life here that’s stable, sustainable, and worth all the sacrifices.
