One of the things we look forward to this year is seeing our eldest start Reception this September. For those coming from the Philippines, Reception is similar to Kindergarten. It is the beginning of a child’s formal school journey in the UK.
Last weekend, we visited her future primary school for their Summer Fair. Since the school is only a few minutes’ walk from our house, we thought it would be a great opportunity to become familiar with the place and the people before her first day. Walking to school instead of driving was another reminder that we made the right choice when we moved into our home. It will make our daily school runs much easier and give us more time together as a family.
As we approached the school, we immediately saw families enjoying the afternoon. There were games, food stalls, inflatables, raffles, and plenty of activities for children. It was more than a school event. It felt like a gathering of neighbours and families who all shared one thing in common. They wanted their children to enjoy growing up in a supportive community.
For us as first time parents with a child entering primary school, this visit was important. Our daughter had the chance to see her future school in a relaxed setting instead of experiencing it for the first time on her first day of classes. We also had the opportunity to walk around the campus, observe the environment, and imagine what her daily routine would soon look like.
One thing that stood out was how welcoming everyone was. Even though we were new, we already felt like we belonged. These are the small moments that help parents feel more confident about where their children will spend the next few years of their lives.
The only downside was the weather.
For the UK, it was unusually hot that Saturday. While everyone was trying to enjoy the sunshine, our youngest daughter was starting to feel uncomfortable in the heat. As parents, we knew it was time to head home. We would rather leave a little earlier than risk her becoming unwell.
Even though our visit was short, we went home happy. We became more familiar with the school, saw the local community come together, and felt even more excited for September.
Sometimes, preparing your child for school does not begin on the first day of classes. It starts with small visits like these. Walking through the school gates together, watching other children play, and allowing them to slowly become comfortable with a new environment makes a big difference.
Looking back, this Summer Fair was not simply another weekend activity. It marked the start of a new chapter for our family.
In a few weeks, those same paths we walked for fun will become part of our daily routine. Our daughter will put on her school uniform, carry her backpack, and begin making memories of her own.
As parents, we know one thing for sure.
We are not the only ones preparing for Reception.
We are growing alongside her, one milestone at a time.
