UK Citizenship Priority Service: You Can Now Get a Faster Decision on British Naturalisation Applications
If you are planning to apply for British citizenship through naturalisation, there is an important change you should know about.
The UK Home Office has introduced a Citizenship Priority Service for eligible British citizenship applications.
This means applicants no longer always need to rely on the standard processing time of up to six months. For an additional fee, eligible applicants applying online from within the UK now have the option to receive a decision much faster.
Unfortunately for us, the timing was slightly painful.
My wife had already submitted her British citizenship application shortly before the new priority option became available.
So yes, we missed it.
What is the UK Citizenship Priority Service?
The Citizenship Priority Service is a new Home Office service which lets eligible applicants pay an additional fee to receive a faster decision on their British citizenship application.
For citizenship applications, the Home Office says you should usually receive a decision within 30 working days.
The priority service costs £500 on top of the normal citizenship application fee.
This is different from the Super Priority Service available for some UK visa and settlement applications. Super Priority is not available for citizenship applications.
For citizenship, the fastest paid service currently offered is the Priority Service with the 30 working day target.
The Home Office formally added the new priority arrangements to its nationality guidance in July 2026. From 20 July 2026, applicants applying from within the UK became able to use the Citizenship Priority Service.
Who is eligible?
The Priority Service covers several types of online British citizenship applications, including:
• British citizenship by naturalisation
• Registration of a child under 18 as a British citizen
• Certain applications involving British Overseas Territories citizens, British Overseas citizens, British subjects, British protected persons and British Nationals Overseas
• Certain people born in the UK who lived here during the first 10 years of their life
• People applying to resume British citizenship after previously renouncing it
• Certain people born to a British father where their parents were not married
• Certain people born before 1 January 1983 to a British mother
• Certain applications from stateless people
You will be told whether the Priority Service is available to you while completing your online application.
The service is not available for applications made using a paper form.
How much does the Citizenship Priority Service cost?
The additional Priority Service fee is £500.
This is paid on top of your normal citizenship application costs.
So this is something worth considering when budgeting for your British citizenship journey.
For some families, £500 is a significant additional expense.
For others, getting a decision within around 30 working days instead of potentially waiting several months might make the additional cost worthwhile.
When does the 30 working days start?
This part is important.
If you need to attend an appointment to provide your biometrics, the processing period starts from the date of your appointment.
If you are instructed to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app, the period starts on the working day after you finish uploading your documents.
The Home Office describes 30 working days as the normal target rather than a guaranteed deadline.
Your application might take longer if the Home Office needs additional information, needs to complete checks with other government departments, or considers your application complex.
Priority does not mean automatic approval.
You still need to meet all the British citizenship requirements.
Can you upgrade an existing citizenship application?
This is the part that affected us.
No.
According to the Home Office guidance, a citizenship application that has already been submitted cannot be upgraded to the Priority Service.
So if you already have an application being processed under the normal route, you cannot simply pay another £500 and change it to priority processing.
My wife submitted her naturalisation application shortly before this new option became available.
Had the service been available when we applied, we would at least have had the choice of whether paying the extra £500 was worth it.
But since her application had already been submitted, there was no option to upgrade it afterwards.

Should you pay £500 for Priority Service?
Personally, I think this depends on your situation.
The standard Home Office service level for naturalisation remains up to six months.
If you are comfortable waiting, saving the £500 makes sense.
But if getting a citizenship decision sooner is important to you, the 30 working day Priority Service gives you another option.
Remember, getting the naturalisation decision is also not the final step.
If your application is approved, you still need to attend your citizenship ceremony before becoming a British citizen. After that, you will need to apply separately for your first British passport if you want one.

Our experience

Then shortly afterwards, the Home Office introduced this new Priority Service.

Then decide whether saving £500 or potentially getting your decision within 30 working days matters more for your situation.
